Education
No one can master dog training in 6 weeks, not even in 6 months.
Each trainer employed by A Better Pet Dog Training has under gone an intensive four phase, 12 month apprenticeship. During this apprenticeship each trainer is taught the skills necessary to teach Puppy Pre-School Classes, Basic Obedience Classes, Advanced Obedience Classes.
Also required is Breeding Identification, Complete Temperament Testing for both Puppies and Adults, Pack Leadership Principles, Comprehensive Behavioral Modification and Problem Solving.
During the third phase each trainer is required to train, handle and title a dog in a competitive dog sport ie. AKC Obedience, AKC Field Trials/Hunt Test or German Schutzhund Sport.
In addition each trainer is required to attend several yearly seminars for continuing education. Seminars include those hosted by The American Boarding Kennel Association, Association of Pet Dog Trainers, American Veterinarian Medical Association as well as International Dog Sport Competitors.
Our director of training James Closson successfully completed a 18 months apprenticeship under the strict European standards as well as studied Pre-Vet. Medicine / Animal Behavior at Southern Oregon State University at Ashland. While attending SOU James had the chance to work with Dr. John Sullivan, one of the worlds leading authorities on Wolf and Canine Behavior. James was able to spend considerable time interacting with Dr. Sullivan’s Wolf Pack as well as his pack of Dingos. Thus, building a unique education on the interactions of canines in a social pack setting.
